Meet All Teachers

  • Jill Miller, Creator of Yoga Tune Up®

I created Yoga Tune Up® as a modality for self-healing. Over my 24 years of studies in yoga, I still felt within my tissues that there were gaps of critical information missing from so many techniques. Yoga Tune Up® evolved out of a need to activate, awaken, and cultivate internal connections to the parts of my body that were not fully "participating" in poses. My playful nuts & bolts approach honors all of the body's inherent biomechanics, and integrates them seamlesly into accessible practices that reveal where our bodies are underused, overused, or just plain "out of touch." My studies of Bodywork as taught by my lifelong mentor Glenn Black, infuses Yoga Tune Up® with a constant collaboration between self-care and healthy modes of exercise for a lifetime.

In addition to yoga, my work draws upon 24 years of expertise including the moving arts of Modern Dance, Pilates, Breathwork, Shiatsu, and Butoh. I teach workshops and retreats internationally, am a longtime faculty member of the Omega Institute, and Kriplau and have traveled nationally choreographing programs for the Discovery Health Channel. Recognized for my unique approach, I've been featured in Yoga Journal, Fit Yoga, Breathe Magazine, Women's Running, and on NPR; the LA Times calls me "kinetically arresting". My DVD series' include Yoga Tune Up®, the critically acclaimed Pranamaya produced Yoga Link- Easy Access to an Ageless Art, and Gaiam's Yoga for Weight Loss Workout. • Maura Barclay

By age 10, I was a two-time junior Olympian in gymnastics. Fast forward to the University of Colorado at Boulder where I won my first of two natural body-building titles. I also began personal training as a way to make money while earning my B.S. After graduating, I became a professional fire fighter. For the first time, everything I did in the gym had a direct impact on my ability to do a job where physical performance could be the difference between life and death.  I was terrified I wouldn't be strong enough and quickly learned the value of functional training.

Having enjoyed a successful career in the fire service, I re-located to Southern California and started practicing Hatha Yoga, training in Mixed Martial Arts and a new Zen art called Budokon, a fusion of martial arts and Yoga. I was very fortunate to study under the Master and creator of Budokon, which allowed me to submerse myself in the purest form of the discipline. I quickly earned the rank of sensei and the privilege to teach at the prestigious Equinox Clubs across the greater LA area.  I recently created a version of Yoga Tune Up®  for Personal Trainers called Physio Tune Up.  It allows fitness professionals to create healthy, lasting change in their clients bodies using a smaller but effective set of Yoga Tune Up® techniques.

Currently, I am a certified personal trainer, certified self-defense instructor, senior Budokon teacher trainer, one of the first people in the US to earn a blue belt in Budokon and a Yoga Tune Up® teacher trainer. I am the Group Fitness Manager of the flagship Equinox in LA where I teach on-going Yoga Tune Up® classes, Unbreakable Woman® and Physio Tune Upseminars.

  • Sadie Chanlett-Avery

Sadie Chanlett-Avery began practicing hatha yoga in utero and emerged into the mountains of West Virginia after a few pivotal cat/cow poses. After a two decade hiatus, she reconnected with yoga at her local gym. The practice ignited an exploration of how Eastern approaches integrate with Western forms of exercise.

Sadie received her teacher certification from Ana Forrest in 2003 and has immersed for months in the jungles of Costa Rica with Master Yoga and Tantric Meditation Teacher, Glenn Black. Sadie holds a personal training certification from the American College of Sports Medicine and serves as the In-House Yogi in the employee gym at Clif Bar & Company. • Sherri Chien

One of Sherri's earliest memories includes taking her first after-school tumbling class at the JCC in Chicago, Illinois.  While bouncing across the mat to Captain and Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together," that inner child's awareness of the body and fascination with body movement inspired a lifetime of enthusiastic athletic endeavors, including participation in biking, dance, kickboxing, and competitive gymnastics and volleyball.  Although she never followed in her ballerina mother's footsteps "œsur les pointes," Sherri found herself drawn to the softer, supportive expression of yoga in search of relaxation and momentary escape from the high tech world.  Her exploration of many different styles of yoga has spanned the country, allowing her the privilege of practicing with incredible teachers such as Baron Baptiste, John Berg, Kent Bond, Gary Kraftsow, Jill Miller, Desiree Rumbaugh, Sianna Sherman, Ganga White and Tracey Rich.  The journey down this yogic path came full circle (but continues indefinitely) when Sherri recently met an aunt on her mother's side, Lin Chiung Chu, in Taiwan, and discovered she was a lifetime member of several international yoga associations and one of the first to bring yoga to the island more than 30 years ago!

Sherri's teaching schedule consists of private sessions and corporate health and wellness programs.  Based on her own experience with body mechanics and injuries from both physical activity and "corporate-itis," Sherri has a personal interest in pain management and injury prevention/recovery for the back, neck and shoulders.  She emphasizes safe, gentle fitness routines to improve posture, release tension, increase flexibility and renew energy, especially important for those sitting at desks all day long.  Sherri is a Level I certified Yoga Tune Up® teacher and is also certified by SCW Fitness for Yoga Fundamentals I, II and Flow.

  • Brigitta Dau

Brigitta has always combined many modalities to help her students experience better health. Certified with Polestar Pilates, she is also a certified Spinning, and Yoga Tune Up® instructor. Holding a degree from the Royal Conservatory of Music for classical piano, Brigitta's teaching career began on the keys.  Teaching piano for eight years allowed her to meet many people - young and old - and to see first hand how music can be such a healing practice for us all.  This is her passion - helping others feel their best.

Learning the fundamentals makes for a great Pilates student as well as musician. It was no surprise that Pilates became her main focus 10 years ago. Having taught privately and group classes ever since, Brigitta enjoys infusing other practices into her work pulling from Yoga, Feldenkrais and Gyrotonics as well. Yoga Tune Up® was just the next obvious step along this path.

Brigitta is thrilled to be embarking on this next chapter of her life and being a part of the Yoga Tune Up® community. Healthy, efficient movement leads to deep, effective breath and our breath is our fuel for passion. Living a full and passionate life is available to all of us, and Brigitta is grateful to be involved in helping others create the space within themselves to experience such grace.

  • Claiborne Davis

Before he was a yoga practitioner, Claiborne was a tennis player who was developing strength imbalances.  “Racquet sports tend to overdevelop muscles on one side of the body, so I realized it was important not to neglect my left half!”  A friend convinced him to attend his first yoga class.  “After that one session, I was hooked.  I had the idea that yoga was passive, but soon realized it’s actually an active and precise way of tuning the body, both physically and mentally.  It’s done wonders for my tennis game and for my life in general.”

Claiborne is honored to represent Yoga Tune Up® in New Orleans.  He completed the Level 1 training with Jill Miller and Lillee Chandra in New York City.  He earned his first yoga certification through Wild Lotus Yoga’s Soul School teacher training program.

Claiborne created a “Yoga For Athletes” course based on Yoga Tune Up® and has previously taught yoga to Tulane University’s baseball team.

He worked a number of years in the television news business and credits yoga with maintaining his sanity throughout odd work hours and ever-present deadlines.

Once he discovered yoga, Owen realized the benefit of balancing his yoga practice with his passion for cycling, nordic skiing and other outdoor pursuits.   In 2002, Owen added Pilates to his movement repertoire and has studied and worked closely under the mentorship of  Nationally recognized Pilates Master teacher Tom McCook, founder and director of Center of Balance in Mt.View.  Owen credits Tom’s mentorship & coaching in his development and success in teaching movement full time.  He continues to develop and refine his personal Yoga and Pilates practice to gain optimal integration for himself as well as his students.

She is teaching Yoga Tune Up® at Redondo Beach Yoga, Yin Yoga Tune Up® at Spectrum  Fitness South Bay and Spectrum Fitness Redondo Beach and Yoga Tune Up® for Bonebuilding at Beach Cities Health District. She teaches other yoga and pilates classes at Beach Cities, Spectrum Fitness, Ofie's Elite Physiques, Redondo Beach Yoga, and Back for Yoga. She schedules privates, semi-privates, and small group classes in her yoga studio and a fully equipped Pilates studio in her home.

Via's dream is to make the life-changing magic of yoga and pilates available to people who think they can't practice yoga and pilates - people with health challenges and motion restrictions, people who are inflexible, people with round bodies, people who think they are "too old" to practice yoga and pilates. She has emphasized yin-style yoga in her classes until now. Since she completed teacher training in Yoga Tune Up® earlier this year, all of her classes are spiced with and inspired by Yoga Tune Up® and she is making plans to schedule and teach more classes that are purely Yoga Tune Up®.

Via is available to teach in studios, gyms, and corporate and community settings in the South Bay of Los Angeles, CA and other locations nearby. Her public class schedule is posted at her website, www.viayoga.us. Via is also available for private yoga and Pilates sessions. She comments on various aspects of yoga and pilates for her students at her blog, which is at www.viayogablog.us. She is on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ViaPage. I love physical fitness, whether it's running, hiking, kayaking, waterskiing, whatever - preferably outdoors. Most mornings I see the sun rise while running on a trail somewhere.

Several years ago a physical therapist I was seeing for a minor repetitive stress injury suggested I start practicing yoga. Although I was a bit intimidated at first (I'm not what you would call flexible), I learned to love it.

A favorite teacher asked me to take over a class for her, one thing lead to another and I began teaching. Another favorite teacher told me "you've got to meet Jill Miller" - which is how I ended up with a teacher page on this website.

I believe yoga is a lifelong study.

The practice of hatha yoga, or physical postures, allows us a pain-free existence which enables us to focus less on ourselves, and more on our world.  I cherish the practice of seva yoga, which means self-less service.  I have volunteered and taught yoga all over the world, including Cambodia, Viet Nam, India, and New Orleans during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

I am student of Jill Miller, Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohen, and Tias Little.  All of my teachers are keen observers of life as we live it in our bodies.  From my studies of somatic psychology, meditation, dance, and massage, I have gleaned the proper tools to guide students toward more freedom, grace, and ease in their precious selves.

I am an advocate of  one-on-one time with students, as I've observed no two bodies are alike.  Each of us has a history that we embody; a keen and compassionate teacher can light our path towards self understanding-- both in our movement patterns and how we move in the world.  A yoga session has the potential to lighten our load as well as enlighten our very being.

In respect for the current economic times, I am offering recession-friendly prices for private sessions and am available for corporate classes and workshops.

It will be a pleasure to meet you on the mat!

    Namaste!

  • Deborah Trevitt

Shortly after moving to California from Canada several years ago, Deborah discovered a yoga studio near her home and began attending classes regularly. Her practice turned serious in 2005, and in 2007 she became certified in Hatha yoga and registered with Yoga Alliance through the teacher training program at Yoga at the Village in Glendale, CA. In early 2010 Deborah expanded her practice by training under Jill Miller and becoming a Yoga Tune Up®-certified teacher.

Currently, she is a teacher at Yoga at the Village and conducts a variety of substitute classes, including beginners, special needs, gentle, and seniors. Deborah starts her regular Tune Up class at Yoga at the Village on July 14th. While Deborah's personal practice is mostly Yoga Tune Up®, Iyengar, and an eclectic mix of flow, stretch and strengthening poses, she continues to explore various styles and is constantly working on improving and expanding her awareness of both the physical and mental aspects of Yoga.

  • Amanda Tripp

It was love at first Sun Salutation for Amanda Tripp ...who was introduced to yoga as a teen when her mom brought home a video. Eventually, she sought out living, breathing teachers to help direct and deepen her practice. Her teachers have been inspirational; her yoga practice: transformational. Amanda felt the call to share the healing benefits of practice with others and completed a 250-hour teacher training program at the Yoga Centre of Burlington.  Continuing studies led her to the work of Jill Miller and certification as a Yoga Tune Up® teacher.  Amanda's classes speak to the body, breath, mind and heart as she guides students toward greater ease of being.

  • Ashley Webb
After almost a decade of climbing the corporate ladder, and six years of casually exploring my yoga practice, I realized that the only time I was truly at peace was on my mat. I finally surrendered to the fact that my life was not working for me, and decided to take a leap of faith, leave my career, and start on a journey toward becoming my best self. One of the most important steps on that journey was taken at a studio near my home in Massachusetts called Open Doors, where I continued to practice, and enrolled in Power Yoga Teacher Training because I believe that our greatest joys are nothing unless shared with others.

My teaching journey continued at Equinox, where I was hired to teach vinyasa classes at two locations in Boston, and where I was exposed to Yoga Tune Up®.  Shortly after starting my Equinox experience I entered the Yoga Tune Up® Level 1 teacher training... and was amazed!  There is so much knowledge of anatomy in the Yoga Tune Up® program. Whether in a power vinyasa or a Yoga Tune Up® class, the incredible information learned during my Yoga Tune Up® training makes me a better teacher for my students, and a better student for my teachers.  I am thrilled to share this gift!

  • Sara Wolverson

In her yoga classes, Sara combines classical asana and vinyasa wth innovative Yoga Tune Up® exercises to increase awareness, restore physical imbalances and improve mental clarity.  In one-to-one sessions, Sara creates a personalized program of yoga, massage and other bodywork as a means to repair damaged tissue, enhance flexibility and build strength.  Her intention is to deepen students' connection to mind, body and breath and enhance overall wellbeing and ease in daily life.

Sara has been practicing yoga for 17 years. At Yale University she studied yoga as a complement to acting, exploring asana to increase the versatility of the body as a tool for physical expression, pranayama as a means to expand breath and foster clarity, and meditation to center the mind and enhance performance. She spent four years of postgraduate studies at Columbia University, NY and the University of Wisconsin focusing on systems of movement, breath and meditation, including Yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Gong, Hung Gar Kung Fu, and the modern dance forms of Laban, Butoh and Martha Graham. Studies in Feldenkrais and Alexander deepened her understanding of how biomechanics affect health and physical performance.

For Sara, yoga unifies her research in dynamics with her interest and training in therapy. As a massage therapist, Sara applies an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology to encourage relaxation and the rehabilitation of tense, weak and injured areas of the body. Yoga is a natural extension of this work.

Sara began training as a yoga teacher at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM) in Chennai, India.  KYM emphasizes breath as the foundation of yoga practice and adapting the practice for the individual. Her teachers included TKV Desikachar, Mekhala Desikachar and Shobana Srinivasan. She continues to advance her teacher training in the Yoga Tune Up® system, which complements the traditional methodology Sara learned at KYM and fuels her passion for exploring the mind-body connection through increased awareness, a spirit of play and Yoga Tune Up's therapeutic applications.

Sara has also created a series of programs for women and couples who are conceiving, pregnant, or new parents.
